http://www.nation.co.ke A new born baby was on Wednesday found alive in a pit latrine after being disposed by its mother who gave birth at Murkwijit village, Kapenguria constituency in West Pokot County.The middle aged women, Maria Chepterit is allegedly said to have dumped the baby boy after she gave birth Tuesday night at 2 am at night.Locals who heard the baby crying at night were forced to dig the pit and rescued it from depths of pit toilet.Area residents nabbed the mother and tipped the police who arrived and arrested her.A neighbor Mrs. Veronica Enus with the police took the baby to Kapenguria County Hospital for treatment.The mother of the baby who committed the heinous act was yesterday taken to Kapenguria law courts accused of concealing birth contrary to section 227 chapter 36 of the penal cord on 28th June 2017 for endeavoring by secret disposal of the new born after delivery. The mother of the new born baby pleaded guilty to the magistrate and asked the court to forgive her. Maria, the mother of four was remanded in custody by Kapenguria law courts resident Magistrate Phoebe Kulecho .The women will appear in court for hearing the case on Thursday 29th June on concealment of birth. The Court staff and neighbor Mrs. Veronica Enus were forced to intervene to wash the baby and bought clothes for it.Speaking to the Press outside Kapenguria law courts, The mother to the baby Mrs. Maria Chepterit said that she committed the act after they quarried with her husband Mr. Nelson Kiprugut who denied that the child was not his.She said she was angered after the husband who is an electrician beat her and threatened her with a sharp Knife.Chepterit who works at petrol station in Makutano town cited that she herself cut the umbilical cord during birth at mid night.She said that she is ready to take up her child.Mrs. Veronicah Enus a neighbor said such cases are rampant in Kapenguria town hence accused young mothers for engaging in alcoholism and disco dances.She said the culprits should face death sentence.
