(26 Feb 2017) LEADIN:?From doubling as home projectors to offering smart dental advice, smartphones are moving beyond traditional uses at Mobile World Congress in Spain.Experts say mobile devices are replacing computers at the centre of peoples' lifestyles, meaning an array of connected technologies and services.STORYLINE:Barcelona, home to towering architectural creations, football superstars and - for one week only - the world's mobile industry.Every year, the tech industry arrives in the cosmopolitan city to debut its latest high-tech creations at Mobile World Congress. While there's plenty of new phones being launched, the annual mobile extravaganza is increasingly becoming about what those devices can do - be it connect to other devices or provide additional services. That means connecting to devices like this-friendly looking security camera, named 'Hugo', by Hubble. As well as keeping watch over owners' homes, the device can track people's emotions by reading their facial expressions – be it happy, sad or surprised."Years ago it was the computer, the computer was the centre of your lifestyle, now it's your smartphone," says Jaime Rivera from 'Pocket Now' technology website."Your smartphone connects to your audio, it gives you your email, it provides you your way to connect to media, provides you your way to be productive, but it also allows you to do so many more things."Many more things includes becoming a home projector. This Hawk smartphone by Akyumen doubles as a home projector, turning any surface into a viewing space. "The smartphone is only going to be more prominent the more useful it is to the person," says Rivera. "For certain people it's not about content consumption, for certain people it's about what they can do with the product and really that separator between most of the public and the smartphone many years ago was that barrier of usefulness, is it really useful or not? And IOT is really what's helping this become useful."The Internet of Things (IOT) trend has seen connected devices enter various fields, from smart homes to healthcare.French startup Kolibree is demonstrating this connected toothbrush that claims to boast artificial intelligence technology. The Ara electric toothbrush is equipped with sensors to ascertain which part of the mouth is being cleaned. That information is then routed to a dedicated app that provides feedback and advice."I think you, one, have verticals that are embracing it," says Jenelea Howell from IHS Technology."So you have your healthcare, your industrial, your smart home, or your connected car, just to name a few. Agriculture, some of the more pieces there on the industrial side. "However, then I think then you have implications of connecting these devices that we have to deal with to move forward. "And that's your security, your standardisation, so making sure your devices can talk to each other, that's our platforms, but that's the implications of connecting all of these devices. "Now, how do we make it work?"Smartphone users are increasingly using their devices to watch content, be it YouTube videos or streaming from online services such as Netflix.Avegant is demonstrating its Glyph personal theatre headset that connects to smartphones and displays immersive content."Your telecom companies are really looking for different ways to connect to the consumer," says Howell. "We are still very much involved with our phone, but your phone is connecting to other devices and so beyond just your phone, where can you go in the industry? Where can you go in your home? Where can you go in your car? That's where the operator can get involved as well, so they're moving further into your life."You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
