[Anchor Lead]The Jeonju city government has announced a plan to build a bike-only lane in the middle of some downtown roads. A heated debate over the city’s plan is expected, and some citizens say there should be a process to hear public opinions and narrow differences between opposing views.[Pkg]A bicycle riding event was held on Kirin Boulevard in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do Province. The Jeonju city government plans to build a bike-only lane along an 11.6-kilometer-section from Hanbyukkyo Bridge Intersection to Jochon Intersection by the end of next year as a way to boost the use of bicycles. It has been decided that the bicycle-only lane will be created in the middle of a six-lane road.[Soundbite] Lee Ho-beom(Jeonju City Government Official) : "Riding bicycles is not easy due to vehicles stopping to unload freight or changing lanes to turn right. We have decided to build a bike lane in the middle of a road to prevent such inconveniences for bicycle riders."In order to build the bike lane, the two sides of the road will be reduced by one lane, respectively, while only one lane will be removed in some sections where traffic congestion is expected. However, concerns are rising over the plan.[Soundbite] Lee Seung-soo(Jeonju Resident) : "It will become more congested if lanes are reduced, especially on weekends. It will not be good."In order to ease public opposition and conflict between supporters and opponents over the curtailment of the road, a process is necessary to persuade citizens and hear their opinions. The Jeonju city government will make a final decision after having citizens ride bicycles along Kirin Boulevard or holding a public hearing.
