Breaking: Clooney Speaks on Weinstein… “Asking if I Knew… Sure”Hollywood hasn’t been this shocked since Claude Raines found out there is gambling at Rick’s in “Casablanca.”As the sordid details of the not-so-secret life of Tinseltown mega-producer Harvey Weinstein keep spilling out into the public eye, the great and good of the American entertainment world are falling all over themselves to tell the media how utterly amazed they are that sex is a commodity in certain circles of La La Land. But Hollywood veteran George Clooney, a man who’s spent four decades immersed in the cultural cesspool, somehow managed to miss all the signs that one of the most famous and powerful men in the business was actually a lech preying on the beautiful, hopeful and generally helpless young women who fell into his orbit. In a clearly contrived, CYA interview with The Daily Beast, Clooney claimed he was as innocent and an ingenue when it came to Weinstein’s wantonness.“He gave me my first big break as an actor in films on ‘From Dusk till Dawn,’ he gave me my first big break as a director with ‘Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.’ We’ve had dinners, we’ve been on location together, we’ve had arguments. But I can tell you that I’ve never seen any of this behavior — ever,” Clooney told The Daily Beast.Nope, Clooney never saw anything that would make him think Weinstein had anything but a wholesome, avuncular interest in the careers of those pretty young things who kept showing up around him. It’s not just Clooney who’s shocked, though. That other Hollywood innocent, two-time Oscar winner and flaming liberal Ben Affleck released a statement about the man who produced the movie “Good Will Hunting,” which made Affleck a star 20 years ago.“I am saddened and angry that a man who I worked with used his position of power to intimidate, sexually harass and manipulate many women over decades. The additional allegations of assault that I read this morning made me sick. This is completely unacceptable, and I find myself asking what I can do to make sure this doesn’t happen to others,” Affleck said, according to Fox News, reading from the same script as Clooney. The sincerity drips from the screen. Imagine being fooled by the cad for two decades!Sure, Weinstein might have taken some amorous interest in a few of those women – what man wouldn’t? – but the idea that he would actually coerce sexual favors in return for his considerable influence was unthinkable.“A lot of people are doing the ‘you had to know’ thing right now, and yes, if you’re asking if I knew that someone who was very powerful had a tendency to hit on young, beautiful women, sure,” Clooney continued. “But I had no idea that it had gone to the level of having to pay off eight women for their silence, and that these women were threatened and victimized. I’ve been talking with a lot of people about this and I don’t know many people who knew of that.”In fact, it shocked Clooney’s conscience as a feminist – to think that sex would ever be a primal force for advance in entertainment.
