SAN FRANCISCO - Saying goodbye is a hard thing to do, but it's something Bruce Bochy has do deal with a lot as the manager of the San Francisco Giants.Thursday Bochy and the team announced they will be designating Conor Gillaspie for assignment. It means Gillaspie is immediately off the team's 40 man roster, and the giants have ten days to either trade the utility player, release him, or place him on waivers. If Gillaspie clears waivers he can choose to stay in the Giants organization and head to Sacramento to play for the River Cats. It's no surprise Bochy had trouble letting Gillaspie go from the 40-man roster. Aside from the fact that the skipper loves utility players who can play all over the field, Gillaspie was well-liked among Giants players."Conor, as you know...as you well know, he did a lot for us last year," Bochy said. "He just played great baseball. Of course he got the big home run to get us through the Wild Card game."This is the tough thing about going through a year like this. It goes with the territory."Gillaspie appeared in 145 games for the Giants over the last two years. He hit .232 with 8 home runs, including the bomb during the 2016 Wild Card game agains the Mets that will go down in Giants lore.We wish you the best, Conor.
