Chinese President Xi Jinping said in Hong Kong Thursday that the central government will as always provide a powerful backing to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) in growing its economy and improving people's wellbeing. Xi made the remarks upon his arrival at the Hong Kong International Airport for a three-day tour of the region, during which he will attend celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the inauguration of the HKSAR's fifth-term government. He will also inspect the HKSAR."I am so happy to once again set foot in Hong Kong after nine years. Hong Kong has always been in my heart," he said, " In two days it will be the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland. This is a great event, a happy event, for the nation and for Hong Kong."Speaking to reporters at the airport, the president said his Hong Kong tour would "serve as an expression of the best wishes for the HKSAR and the powerful backing by the central government to Hong Kong". Xi congratulated the HKSAR on the great achievements it has made over the past 20 years and wished that the HKSAR would create its glory. "The central government has provided a strong backing to Hong Kong over the past 20 years and so will it in the future in growing its economy and improving Hong Kong people's wellbeing", Xi said. He said he will join the people from all walks of life in Hong Kong in reviewing the SAR's extraordinary 20-year journey, sum up experience and plan the future to ensure the successful practice of the "one country, two systems" would go on smoothly and steadily into the future. At the end of the speech, Xi expressed the hope that he would experience in person the new outlook and new changes that have taken place in Hong Kong these years.
