(25 May 2017) LEADIN:Denmark's Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is presenting a major exhibit of works by Danish painter Tal R.It shows how the Israel-born artist has often championed the ignored, marginalised and forgotten in modern society.STORYLINE:Colourful street scenes, locked doors, chance encounters, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is mounting a new exhibit exploring the work of Danish artist Tal R.Israel-born Tal Shlomo Rosenzweig studied at Copenhagen's Royal Academy of Fine Arts in the late 1990s. He later became a professor at the Arts Academy of Dusseldorf.Over the years, Louisiana has acquired several works by the artist. He's described as one of the most striking artists of his generation and now at the age of 50 the museum thought it right to present an overview of his work during the last 20 years. But don't call it a retrospective, works aren't arranged in chronological order. Instead, it's a wild mix of sculptures, collages and large-scale paintings spread across three museum galleries. There are over 50 paintings, 6 collages, 34 artist's books, 35 sculptures and 26 drawings, dating from 1995 to 2017."We are celebrating two decades of his achievements and this is the first time that anyone sort of unfolds his oeuvre and scrutinizes what he's been doing in all kind of mediums and formats and materials," explains curator Anders Kold."And hence the title; 'The Academy of Tal R' because it's a sort of a pun. He really is one of the least academic artists I know and at the same time, his work altogether constitutes an academy."Tal R's work is often considered free, wild and searching. The exhibit demonstrates how from the outset the artist has been a storyteller with an eye for the overlooked and hidden spaces in modern life.Sometimes that can mean a locked door, or an open doorway leading to a staircase. In this way, he often asks the viewer to complete the story."You just see a door. And in a way, I think a very beautiful and I think profound way, an entry into a shop, is an entry into a painting, is an entry into what art can do," says Kold. "Which means the artist will wave you goodbye at the doorstep and it is only you yourself that ultimately will fill the artwork with what it is true about."One area often overlooked by critics - and art buyers - is Tal R's sculptural work. Not so at this exhibit, the artist himself has arranged this wild walkway filled with striking sculptures and moving, noise-making installations. The works are from 2005 to 2016.Kold says it's like exploring a colourful, circus-like toy store, but - just like many of the artist's other works - viewers still encounter a figure they must explore."We meet a figure and they can be something that almost cannot stand erect or bare its own weight, like some crumbled Giacometti figure or a funny thing coming out of a toy shop," he says. "But they are all figures standing, if not erect, then standing as a presence in front of you."Many of the artist's works are inhabited by people, not by the artist himself or close friends, but by unknown figures. There's a man sitting on a bench, a stooping woman or a group looking out at the viewer.Kold says it's about standing up for the ignored in modern society and demanding attention."Tal's work is concerned and in a way speaks for also the other," he says. "For people who need space and liberty and freedom. And I think his own work and what he references, what we can see in the work, is about making space, for himself as well as for the others, fellow human beings. "And that it is ultimately a creative factor for the betterment of us all."It's the pet name the artist and his siblings gave their father when they were young. You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
