Gentrification, a word originally used to describe the social phenomena that occurred in the UK 50 years ago, has infected to our society in the past two years. The stars who brought life back to deserted neighborhoods and stagnant businesses have started leaving. Those neighborhoods are now left with the struggle to keep their charm. The same has been happening in 'Seongsudong', a town located where Cheonggye River and Jungnang River streams into the great Han Rived. Seongdong District decided to not enemize this phenomena but to heal and revive the area. This talk will be about how life was brought back to a darkening town.Won Oh Chong is currently the mayor of Seongdong-gu (2014-), and a Special Professor at Hanyang University's School of Business (2016-). He has also recently published a book on gentrification called "Paradox of the City, Gentrification" (2016).This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
