Glen Campbell dead Rhinestone Cowboy singer dies aged 81Glen Campbell has died at the age of 81 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.His publicist Sanford Brokaw confirmed the Rhinestone Cowboy singer passed away on Tuesday at an Alzheimer’s facility in Nashville surrounded by his family.His family said in a statement: ‘It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and legendary singer and guitarist, Glen Travis Campbell, at the age of 81, following his long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.’His other popular songs included By The Time I Get To Phoenix and Wichita Lineman.Born in 1936, Campbell was the seventh of 12 children born to sharecroppers in Delight, Arkansas. His love for music started early, learning guitar as a boy and playing in his uncle’s band as a teenager.He considered Rhinestone Cowboy his best song, which topped the country, pop and adult contemporary charts in 1975.In 1967 Glen made history by winning four Grammys in the country and pop categories. He was also an actor and TV presenter, hosting The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour from 1969 to 1972.Campbell announced he had Alzheimer’s in 2011, going on a farewell tour of the US and recording album Ghost On The Canvas. Three of his children accompanied him on the tour, and although he struggled to remember the lyrics, the shows were well received by fans.He told People magazine at the time that he had been suffering from short-term memory loss for years before he was diagnosed.‘I still love making music, and I still love performing for my fans. I’d like to thank them for sticking with me through thick and thin,’ he said.Glen, who was married four times, is survived by his wife Kim, and his eight children: Cal, Shannon, Ashley, Debby, Kelli, Travis, Kane and Dillon.He had ten grandchildren and great and great-great grandchildren.
