Internal Affairs Ministry officials say household spending in Japan in 2016 dropped 1.7 % in yen terms from the previous year. It marks the third-consecutive annual decline.The officials said on Friday that average monthly spending was about 2,520 dollars.They noted that car sales were sluggish and that social expenses fell.Families spent a greater portion of their money on food. The share of food-related bills in the average household's monthly budget surged to 25.8%. That's the highest in 29 years.
