“July 17 neighborhood”was one of the most important strongholds of Islamic State in western Mosul. Many buildings here were transformed into factories and warehouses by IS fighters to produce and store weapons and explosives. Iraqi army liberated this neighborhood on May 20 after days of fierce clash. Damaged buildings and burnt cars can be seen everywhere around this neighborhood. Iraqi Rapid Response Forces are still trying to dispose the explosive devices left by IS. Iraqi forces launched the offensive to retake western Mosul on February 19 and have liberated more than 90% of this part, but there are still around 200,000 civilians trapped here.
