ABCNewsNortheast braces for late-winter wallopBy MICHAEL EDISON HAYDEN, JULIA JACOBO and MAX GOLEMBOMar 13, 2017, 1:28 PM ETWATCH: Blizzard conditions, possibly bringing up to 2 feet of snow, are forecast for the East Coast, with winter storm warnings going into effect tonight.After an unseasonably warm winter in parts of the Northeast, residents are now bracing for a late season wallop that could drop up to two feet of snow in parts of the region.The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for several parts of the Northeast. A blizzard warning refers to sustained or frequent winds of 35 mph or higher with considerable snowfall that will reduce visibility to a quarter of a mile or less for at least a three-hour period.When will it start?The snow is expected to start between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. in Washington, D.C., and move northward, hitting the Philadelphia, New York and Boston areas overnight.Washington, D.C., is expected to get four to six inches, Philadelphia is expected to get nearly 10 inches and New York and Boston could see at least a foot of snow. Residents who live in areas with higher elevations may be shoveling 20 inches to 2 feet of snow in the morning.￼Winter weather alerts around the Eastern United States.￼Heavy snow will hit Boston by Tuesday morning.When will the snow end?The storm should end at roughly 11 a.m. Tuesday morning in most cases, but may persist in parts of New England until later that day.The impact of the storm on travelers could be massive, especially for this time of year.Such a heavy snow storm is not common for this time of year. If New York City gets hit with at least 14 inches of snow, it would be the third biggest snowstorm in the city's history for the month of March.It also could be the biggest snowstorm of the season."This would certainly be the biggest snowstorm of the 2017 winter season in New York City," Faye Barthold, a weather service meteorologist based on Long Island, told The Associated Press.How the storm will affect residents in the NortheastNew York City mayor Bill de Blasio announced that public schools have been canceled for Tuesday. New York City one of the several areas under a blizzard warning.American Airlines has canceled all flights out of La Guardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport on Tuesday. The airline has also canceled all flights out of Washington, D.C., scheduled before 8 a.m. Tuesday and all flights out of Philadelphia scheduled before 5 p.m. Tuesday. In Boston, American Airlines flights after 8 a.m. Tuesday have been canceled, and normal operations are expected to resume Wednesday morning.Cancellation details from other major airlines were not immediately available.How the storm will impact other statesMeanwhile, the Great Plains region has already been dumped in a blanket of white.Up to 10 inches of snow fell from the Dakotas to Iowa yesterday and overnight.In the Midwest, Chicago is expected to get half a foot of snow.Snow and freezing temperatures also hit the South over the weekend, and Arkansas received between four and five inches of snow.One to three inches of snow fell in parts of Tennessee, causing travel delays and auto accidents throughout the state.The weather has vacillated widely in the Southeast in recent weeks.
