Description
When immigrants permanently make an international move, they bring with them values that do not always belong in their new country. Consequently, immigrant teens and second-generation immigrants are often endowed with the unique challenge of reconciling the world views of their parents with the world views of their non-immigrant American peers. Countless people will no doubt be able to relate to Nicole Kim's reflective talk, where she shares her family's story of moving from Korea to the Bay Area and how that story has sandwiched her between parallel worlds. Mei Tam is a senior at St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco, California. As a Chinese-American attending a predominately white high school, she has come to realize the importance of keeping one's own identity despite being a minority. She hopes to help Asian Americans redefine their identity that many, including herself, has struggled with growing up. Mei hopes that once Asian-Americans can change how they view themselves, the community will become more comfortable with themselves and they will have the confidence to raise their voices. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
