[Anchor Lead]Controversy is brewing over the safety of women's sanitary pads. The production and sale of the sanitary pads in question has been suspended after many consumers complained of side effects they experienced after using them. Civic groups are urging the authorities to inspect all kinds of sanitary pads on the market.[Pkg]Klean Nara, the third largest maker of sanitary pads in Korea, has announced the suspension of the production and sale of their controversial Lilian sanitary pad as more and more consumers have been complaining about the product. One civic group analyzed some three thousand complaints received in just two days and found that 85 percent of users experienced reduced menstrual bleeding after using Lilian pads, while more than half of the users complained of shorter periods and interrupted menstrual cycles. The civic group is urging measures, as the issue is not limited to the Lilian pads only. The results of tests conducted by researchers from Kangwon National University showed that nine other kinds of sanitary pads contained the same hazardous substances as Lilian products. Some products contained them in even larger amounts.[Soundbite] Lee-Ahn So-young(Korea Women's Environmental Network) : "We urge the authorities to inspect the safety of all sanitary pads and devise measures to protect women's health."Many are calling for an epidemiologic survey on the possible role of sanitary pads in causing negative effects in the human body.[Soundbite] Prof. Choi Kyung-go(Seoul National University) : "If any kind of correlation is found, it becomes not a subjective complaint, but a scientific fact. Then the substances causing the problem must be found."The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety launched an inspection into five manufacturers of sanitary pads on Thursday.
