Famine is a scientific classification based on several factors. a food crisis can only be called a famine once certain criteria have been met. That includes at least 30 percent of a country's children suffering from severe malnutrition. That's the case in South Sudan's Unity State. The last time a famine was declared six years ago it was due to drought, which is a natural cause. In South Sudan, though, the famine is considered man-made, with the world's youngest nation embroiled in conflict since it gained its independence in 2011.
