They take classes and answer the teacher's questions in a standing position. This is a so-called "chairless classroom."[Soundbite] Lee Ka-hyun(Elementary School Student) : "It's more fun to study in a standing position. It improves my posture and helps me to grow taller."[Soundbite] "5, 6, 7, 8!"In this class, students exercise on gym balls, which have replaced chairs. The children are excited to move to the teacher's instructions. It more resembles playtime than studying.[Soundbite] Chung Jin-nam(Teacher) : "We start classes by exercising every morning. By moving a lot and sweating, the children become healthier."The goal of chairless classrooms is to minimize obesity among children and promote their health by increasing physical activity at schools. A study in Finland, which introduced chairless classrooms years ago, shows that the rate of obese and overweight children has dwindled by nearly 50 percent since schools began to conduct classes in a standing position.[Soundbite] Prof. Oh Beom-jo(Boramae Medical Center) : "Research shows that learning in a standing position more than three hours a day is similar to cutting half a bowl of rice from your daily diet. It helps to reduce weight."With the obesity rate among elementary school students rising by the year, more schools will likely introduce chairless classrooms.
