Adam Shay was 21 when he died of a opioid overdose in his hometown of Mentor. Shortly before, he'd signed up to be an organ donor. Karen Goodwin, who was herself in recovery from a substance abuse disorder, received a kidney and pancreas from Adam when he died on Jan. 8, 2014. Organ donation has increased dramatically in Ohio in the past five years due to the rise in opioid overdoses, according to the state's transplant organizations. In Northeast Ohio last year 1 in 4 donors were overdose victims.
