[Anchor Lead]It’s a new era for ultra-high definition broadcasting, with terrestrial broadcasters now offering UHD in the Seoul metropolitan area as of today. A crowning achievement for the local industry, it means viewers can enjoy a cutting-edge service free of charge.[Pkg]An increasing number of customers are looking for UHD TVs in electronics stores. UHD TVs provide image quality four times sharper than that of existing HD TVs, as well as better surround sound.[Soundbite] Park Tae-hun(Seoul Resident) : "I will have clearer images for sports matches. I think I'll also be able to immerse myself more into movies."Viewers also have high expectations for video on demand and various two-way services. However, users need additional devices in order to watch ultra-high definition programs. For American-standard UHD TVs currently out on the market, an antenna must be connected to the TV set. A separate set-top box is needed for European-standard UHD TVs released before last February. However, since electronic appliance retailers sell only UHD TV sets, consumers must purchase the antennas separately.[Soundbite] Prof. Lee Sang-woon(Dept. of Multimedia/Namseoul Univ.) : "It's like buying a car without tires. Antennas should be embedded in the TVs or be available for separate purchase."KBS and two other terrestrial stations are scheduled to begin UHD broadcasting today in the Seoul metropolitan area and plan to expand the service nationwide by 2021.
