Life expectancy has grown overall in the U.S., but how long many years depends on where you live, according to a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine. Researchers analyzed records from U.S. counties from 1980 to 2014. The report says counties in central Colorado had the highest life expectancies in the U.S. As for the lowest? That would be the red counties on this map. Counties in South Dakota and North Dakota had the lowest life expectancy. The report says those counties typically have Native American reservations. Counties along the lower half of the Mississippi, in eastern Kentucky, and southwestern West Virginia also had lower life expectancies. Counties in central Colorado, Alaska and along both the east and west coasts had the largest increases in life expectancy. Southern counties in states from Oklahoma to West Virginia saw little or no improvement.
