[Anchor Lead]Artistic woodworking is gaining popularity among young people and retirees. Attracted by the charms of the craft, some people are setting out on a new life as carpenters. Here is more.[Pkg]This small workshop was set up by a married couple--both woodcraft artists, The husband cuts wood with a knife, and his wife adds colors to make wooden dolls with delicate facial expressions. Without any designs drawn up in advance, the dolls are special in that they are crafted improvisationally.[Soundbite] Im Joo-hyun(Woodcraft Artist) : "The hours just fly by when I work."The husband and wife were a car mechanic and a homemaker, respectively. But eleven years ago, after coming across a wood doll in a magazine and copying it for themselves, they decided to venture to Sweden to study woodwork. Since then, they have been living a new life as woodcraft artists.[Soundbite] Yong Hyung-joon(Woodcraft Artist) : "More than anything else, using my hands to work with wood fits my sensibilities."This man who planes wood to create a smooth surface...was formerly a glass cleaner for high-rise buildings. It's been 10 years since he became a carpenter. He is now holding an exhibition featuring Korean wooden furniture inspired by the elegant lines of the eaves found on traditional Korean hanok houses. He has also discovered a new dream.[Soundbite] Kim Young-chan(Carpenter) : "I have thought of holding an exhibition featuring all the furniture I could make to give to my child as a wedding gift. I want to live as a carpenter until I turn 70 or 80."These people are breathing new life into dead wood. Driven by deep affection for woodwork, they have opened a second chapter in their lives.
